JOHNSON & JOHNSON ONE YOUNG WORLD SCHOLARS 2018

Hilda Kwezi Nurse & Midwife, Tanzania Midwives Association, Tanzania

Hilda Kwezi has been a nurse and midwife since 2013 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. She is working on her Master of Research and Publication in Reproductive and Child Health Science.

Hilda currently works with the Tanzania Midwives Association (TAMA) as project coordinator of its Postpartum Family Planning Project, advocating for increased family planning for women after childbirth.  Before that she has worked as National Coordinator of TAMA’s project “Helping Mothers Survive – Bleeding after Birth Training”, evaluating the impact of helping midwives manage postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) and trained more than 319 health workers to manage PPH.  This provides significant health benefits for under-served women and families in the communities.

Hilda is on the Executive Committee of the Tanzania Midwives Association, helping change policies and practices and was elected as Treasurer in 2017. While in training, she was the Chairperson of the Sports and Social Affairs Committee of the University Nursing Student Association of Tanzania from 2011-2012.

“My passion is to make sure we reduce the high maternal and child mortality rate in Tanzania. I will be a leader, advocating for the necessary changes to midwifery education, and healthcare policies and procedures.”
