Together for STEM: The European Business Platform for Inclusive STEM

In collaboration with our network partner CSR Europe, and together with IBM, Samsung Electronics and Amgen, we have launched the Together For Stem – The European Business Platform for Inclusive STEM. The platform will combine the expertise, leadership and resources of these leading companies in order to build a stronger offer to increase diversity in STEM fields.

Challenge

The European economy is driven by knowledge. For our industries to remain competitive and to drive innovation we need to address the shortage in the talent pipeline across the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. These sectors are steadily expanding, but the selection base is not expanding at the same pace. Europe lacks diversity in STEM and consequently its development is at risk of becoming unsustainable.

In fact, women they make up just 31.4% of the STEM students in Europe and for ICT studies it can be as low as 8%. In countries with high gender equality index, such as Norway and the Netherlands, there is a significantly low percentage of women graduating in STEM related fields. This further highlights the need for a coordinated approach to STEM education within Europe, and to not rest on our laurels of high societal gender equality.

Our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals signifies a vision of inclusive education, leaving no one behind in STEM and elsewhere.

Platform
Lead by CSR Europe, and in collaboration with IBM, Samsung Electronics and Amgen, we have launched the Together For Stem – The European Business Platform for Inclusive STEM. The platform will combine the expertise, leadership and resources of these leading companies in order to build a stronger offer to increase diversity in STEM fields. The Platform aims to build further on existing initiatives by finding the common areas of action and increasing impact. To ensure the value of the platform and to build up business collaboration the Platform is currently in an incubation phase to test the collaborative model, with the intention of building a long-term partnership with these and liked-minded companies.

Objectives
Together with business practitioners, stakeholders and policymakers, the platform aims to:

  • Optimize STEM initiatives within the companies through learning and sharing among peers and making the STEM initiatives more coherent and strategic at European level.
  • Create an improved offer for young people at local level. The Platform will connect partners locally to work together on practical actions. This will make STEM initiatives more inclusive, engaging with youth on a longer term, providing better content etc.
  • Engage with policymakers at local and EU level for smarter policy in the area of STEM education.
